Does Diesel Actually Save you Money

in Blog

The argument over whether or not diesel fueled vehicles save an owner money continues to be debated by both professionals and the average car person.  Some say that the savings of owning a diesel powered vehicle are as clear as day while others say that diesel can actually cost a person more than if they stick with the traditional gasoline powered automobiles.

The truth

So what is the truth about this great debate? Well, as much as marginalized stances is despised, the correct answer is that both parties are right–the diesel engine has the ability to save money but does not always guarantee savings for the owner.

The benefits of diesel

There are two main reasons that contribute to diesel fuel being simultaneously cost efficient and expensive.  The first, and the primary reason as to why diesel engines can save an owner money, is because of the operation of diesel engines.Diesel Fuel

Unlike gas powered engines that drive pistons through combustions ignited by a mixture of compressed air and fuel set off by a spark, diesel engines forgo the need for potentially costly things as spark plugs and ignition systems.  They accomplish this by adding the diesel fuel to the engine only after the pistons have compressed the air, at which point the air itself is heated sufficiently to ignite the fuel and drive the motor.

The different operating models of diesel engines likewise contribute to a higher fuel efficiency than their gasoline powered counterparts. The elimination of potentially costly repairs and a higher fuel efficiency can directly translate to saved cash for diesel owners.

The downside of diesel

However, as stated early, there is a second side to this comparison. While prices fluctuate according to the trending markets, diesel fuel is traditionally costlier than gasoline by fractions on the gallon.

The visible and immediate increase in cost for diesel powered vehicles is the primary reason why many justifiably claim that diesel fueled autos are more expensive than gasoline automobiles. Throw in the fact that many diesel vehicles are large trucks and rigs and one can see the legitimacy of the claim that diesel will not save an owner money.

Whether you side with those who say diesel saves money or with those that say it costs more money, the good news is that you’re right.  The bad news, however, is that yet again those who are contemplating which fuel source to go with will have to make their own decision with the knowledge that diesel fuel has the ability to save money, but not the guarantee.
