Making Your Semi Truck Much More Efficient

in Blog

All fleet managers and independent truckers would like to make their semi-trucks more fuel efficient. By so doing they could reduce their costs and increase their profits.

Tips to Increase Fuel Economy

But how can you make a semi-truck get a better fuel economy? Even seasoned haulers do not know every trick in the book, but there are several ways for truckers and entire fleets to increase the fuel efficiency of their tractor trailers. Some of the best ways to boost the fuel economy of the semi-truck and start saving even more money on operating costs include the following three points:

  1. Change the way the rig is being driven. Very few professional drivers consider their driving habits when they try to Semi Truckthink of ways to save on fuel, but the truth is that changing the way one drives a semi-truck can make all the difference in the rig’s fuel efficiency. Accelerating and braking frequently can cause a big rig to guzzle fuel, but if a driver will consciously regulate their speed to a more consistent level (aka, follow the speed limit) then they will find that they are able to expend less diesel fuel. In addition, letting the truck idle for extended periods of time, as is a common habit among drivers, literally burns fuel without reason.
  2. Outfit the truck with the aerodynamic equipmentWhen a person thinks of a semi-truck lumbering down the interstates of America, one of the last things that come to mind will be aerodynamics. However, there are specific kits and modifications that can be installed on both the tractor and the trailer that will allow for a more aerodynamic vehicle, which in turn will greatly decrease the fuel need to move down the roadway.
  3. Keep up on regular maintenance. Having the truck inspected regularly for fluid levels and filter conditions will help keep the truck in prime operating form.

With these three components in mind, a driver will be able to lower their operating costs through increased fuel efficiency.
