Retrofit Deadline Approaches

Date: January 01, 2014

Time is running out. The deadline to meet the California Air Resources Board Regulation to retrofit heavy duty diesel trucks is coming January 1, 2014. The regulation provides owners of heavy duty trucks and buses (GVWR rating of 26,000 or more) two options to comply. They must:

Option 1 -Follow the compliance schedule by engine model year that requires 1996 – 2006 model engines to be retrofit with a diesel particulate matter filter by January 1, 2014, or

Option 2 -Use a phase-in option that requires 90% of vehicles in their fleet to be retrofit with a diesel particulate filter by January 1, 2014. (Note: this option requires annual reporting to ARB)

The process of ordering and installing can take a few months, so fleet owners should plan now to meet the January 1 compliance and avoid penalties. Starting now will help fleets figure out which options make the most sense for their businesses, or which funding options might be available.

Owners of small fleets (defined as one to three trucks with a GVWR greater than 14,000 lbs.) are required to begin retrofitting their heavier vehicles one vehicle per year, starting this year. They must report their fleet information to ARB in order to receive this extension.

Lighter diesel trucks with a GVWR of 14,001 to 26,000 pounds have no compliance requirements until 2015.
