Understanding Diesel Exhaust Fluid And Your SCR System

in Blog

Used correctly, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and an SCR System can improve your fuel efficiency and reduce your emissions—here is what you need to know:

What Is An SCR System?

SCR stands for Selective Catalytic Reduction. An SCR system is an advanced technology designed to control emissions. It injects a liquid reducing agent through a catalyst into the exhaust stream of a diesel engine. This converts dangerous nitrogen oxides into water, normal nitrogen, and small amounts of CO2—typical components of the air you normally breathe.

What Is Diesel Exhaust Fluid?

The most common liquid reducing agent used in SCR systems is diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). DEF is made from water and urea so it is non-toxic. To learn more about DEF, check out the FAQ section of this webpage.

How Much DEF Do You Need?

The amount of DEF you need varies depending on how much you are hauling and how far you are travelling, but you can expect to use approximately 2.5 gallons per 800 miles of travel.

Nitrogen oxides are bad for the environment and bad for the people who have to breathe the polluted air. SCR systems use DEF to convert these dangerous contaminants into safe components. Using DEF protects the environment and the air you breathe, but it may also help you protect your wallet by improving your fuel mileage.

Where Can You Get DEF?

Be sure to monitor your levels of DEF so the tank doesn’t run to low—if this happens your SCR system won’t work and you may have difficulty starting your truck. DEF is carried at many truck stops, but it is important to be prepared.  FleetServ can help you replenish your stock and get ready to hit the road. Order some today!
