What is the Biennial Inspection of Terminals (BIT) Program?

in Blog

Vehicle maintenance is always important, but when you run a fleet of trucks, it becomes even more important to be proactive about vehicle maintenance.  The state of California instated the BIT program to help fleet owners stay on top of their regular maintenance.

The History

The California Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety act is an important part of all fleet regulations today.  This act was created in 1988 to enforce biennial terminal inspections and to keep all professional fleets in top shape before they get on the road.

Complying with the BIT will not only help your fleet to avoid penalization, it will also help you to regularly maintain your fleet’s vehicles.

The Details

BIT is required for all Motor trucks with three or more axles and a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds.  And this means that most (if not all) fleets must comply with regular BITs.  The inspections are performed by the state every 25 months, but must also be performed within individual companies every 90 days.

Each inspection covers the following elements of the trucks:BIT Program

  1. Break adjustments and systems
  2. Steering and suspension
  3. Tires and Wheels
  4. Vehicle Connecting System

Complying with the BIT program is absolutely essential to your company’s success and will keep your vehicles in good repair.
